Alt-Kainach Castle

Museum

"Alt Kainach" has its origins in a Romanesque-Gothic fortified tower from the 12th or 13th century and was probably surrounded by a moat. In the 14th century, the complex was expanded with a ring wall with a gatehouse, three corner towers, and a tower-like extension on the west side.

In 1467, the castle was owned by Rudolf von Holleneck. Around 1540, Helferich von Holleneck-Kainach converted the complex into a Renaissance castle. In 1610, Alt-Kainach was sold to Johann Ferdinand Tierndl. In 1716, Paul Ernst von Aposteln acquired the castle. In 1755, it came to a forced auction. Franz Josef Freiherr von Moscon became the new lord of the castle. In the 19th century, Anna von Moscon sold the estate to her father, Anton von Schellenbauer.

In 1880, the Graz-Köflacher Eisenbahn- und Bergbaugesellschaft bought the castle and built apartments for its workers there. At the end of the 19th century, the remaining surrounding walls on the south and west fronts were removed. In 1966, the GKB donated the castle to the Styrian Castle Association. This association restored the building and established the "Castle Museum" within it, which opened in 1972.
