In the heart of the Rhodope village of Mogilitsa stands Agushevi Konatsi Castle, an impressive late medieval feudal castle considered the largest of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula. Its expansive layout and rich history make it a remarkable testament to bygone eras.
History+
The construction of the complex spanned two decades, from 1820 to 1840. Three master builders were commissioned to create this imposing estate for the wealthy Turkish feudal lord Salih Aga and his three sons. The castle boasts an impressive 220 windows, 86 doors, and 24 chimneys. It is divided into three interconnected courtyards, each housing its own residential and economic buildings, separated by internal walls. Each courtyard featured a well, a lord's residence, accommodation for servants and seasonal workers, as well as stables, barns, and other utility rooms.
