Aflenz Castle

The former Probsteigebäude belonged to the Abbey of St. Lambrecht until 1767.

After the dissolution of the Abbey's Styrian estates, it passed into private hands and underwent several changes of ownership. In the 19th century, it served as a district court, and later as a residential and commercial building. In the 20th century, it housed various shops and offices, and for a time, even a cinema.

The Probsteigebäude is a two-story building with a striking Baroque facade. The core of the building dates back to the Middle Ages, but it was extensively rebuilt and expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. Particularly noteworthy are the ornate stucco ceilings on the first floor and the historic cellar vaults.

The building is an important testimony to the architectural and cultural history of the region. It reflects the changing uses and demands placed on such a prominent building over the centuries.

In the early 21st century, the Probsteigebäude underwent a comprehensive restoration. Great care was taken to preserve the historical substance while adapting the building to modern requirements. Today, it houses a cultural center with exhibition rooms, event spaces, and a café. It has thus become a vibrant meeting place for art and culture lovers.
