Abtnaundorf Castle

Naundorf was an old village with an estate that came into the possession of St. Peter's Monastery in Merseburg in the 13th century, thus acquiring the "Abt" (Abbot) in its name. The monastery leased the estate multiple times, sometimes taking on the name of the tenant (Wognaundorff). Around 1540, the Heiterblick outwork, belonging to the estate, was built.

After the Reformation, the estate frequently changed owners (including Johann Ernst Kregel von Sternbach from 1696), until the Frege family acquired it in 1789, remaining in their ownership until 1916. Already from the mid-18th century, parts of the extensive landscape park between the village and the Parthe were laid out. In 1789, the estate was owned by the von Frege family.

During the Battle of Leipzig, Abtnaundorf was severely affected by the fighting on October 18, 1813.

In the 19th century, Abtnaundorf, with its publicly accessible estate park, was a popular excursion destination for Leipzig residents, reachable via the Parthe meadows. From 1891-93, under Arnold Woldemar von Frege-Weltzien, the manor house of the estate was demolished and rebuilt as a castle (architect: Peter Dybwad). In 1945, the owners were forcibly dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

In 1947, the manor became a municipal estate, and the castle was used for teacher training and as a hospital. From 1966 to 1996, it housed the children's department of St. Georg Hospital. Since 1998, the property has been developed into a comfortable residential complex by a private investor. From 2012, the apartments of Abtnaundorf Castle were divided into condominiums by a new owner.
