Aarberg Castle
Aarberg Castle is a historic structure in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is located in the municipality of Aarberg in the Seeland region and today serves as a regional administrative center. Its history is closely linked to the development of the town of Aarberg and the rule of Bern.
History+
The origins of Aarberg Castle date back to the 13th century. Around 1220, Count Ulrich of Neuchâtel-Aarberg founded the town of Aarberg on the Aare River. A comital residence likely soon emerged within the fortified settlement, possibly near the current church. This early castle became the seat of the Bernese bailiff in 1358 and 1379, respectively. It suffered a fire in 1419, which destroyed large parts of the town, and was again struck by fire in 1477. The current castle building, a typical Bernese Renaissance structure with a distinctive roof and a hexagonal stair tower, was probably erected in the first half of the 16th century as the new bailiff's residence.
