Aalborghus Castle

Commissioned by King Christian III, Aalborghus Castle was constructed between 1539 and 1555. Under the reign of Christian IV, it underwent extensive renovations in the first half of the 17th century. Although initially planned as a fortress, it soon served as the residence and administrative seat for the governors of the northern Danish provinces and as a central collection point for taxes and in-kind contributions. However, it was not used as a royal residence. The oldest preserved part is the East Wing, built under Christian III, while the North Wing was later added under Christian IV.

Aalborghus Castle is situated in the city of Aalborg, within the Aalborg district, in the North Jutland region of Denmark. It is located at an elevation of approximately 9 m above sea level, directly on the Limfjord.

Today, Aalborghus Castle houses local authorities and continues to serve as an administrative building. The interior rooms are not accessible to visitors, but the castle courtyard and the historic ramparts are publicly accessible. In the casemates beneath the western rampart, visitors can learn more about the building's history through information panels.
