A Pro Castle
The moated castle A Pro, a charming historical structure, is picturesquely situated near Lake Lucerne in Seedorf, Canton Uri, Switzerland. It is distinguished by its unique combination of a representative residential building and decorative defensive elements from the Renaissance period.
History+
Schloss A Pro was built between 1556 and 1558 by Jakob a Pro, a wealthy treasurer and chief magistrate from Uri, who was ennobled for his military merits. He acquired a property free of feudal rights to erect a representative residence there. After his death in 1562, his son Peter a Pro inherited the estate. Peter, also a chief magistrate and diplomat, transformed the castle in 1578 into a charitable foundation for the poor, known as the Apro Fideicommiss, which owned the property until 1959. Between 1891 and 1896, the castle underwent its first comprehensive renovation and briefly served as a rectory. In 1959, the Canton of Uri acquired the castle, renovated it again, and opened it to the public in 1967.
