Wörth Castle

Schlössli Wörth is a historic building, picturesquely situated on a small island in the Rhine Falls basin near Neuhausen am Rheinfall in Switzerland. Originally built as a customs station and transshipment point for goods, it is now a popular excursion destination and houses a restaurant.
History+
The origins of Schlössli Wörth date back to the 12th century, when it was built under the name Burg Werd. Its strategic location at the Rhine Falls made it an important point for goods transport, as goods had to be reloaded here between ships and wagons. In the 13th century, the castle belonged to the Dukes of Austria, before it was acquired in 1291 by the Schaffhausen family Schultheissen von Randenburg. Later, in 1429, the property passed to the Benedictine monastery of All Saints in Schaffhausen, which ceded it to the city of Schaffhausen in 1524. Between 1621 and 1622, the castle underwent a redesign. In 1832, the city handed the complex over to the Canton of Schaffhausen, which renovated it and opened it as a restaurant in 1837. To this day, the castle remains in the possession of the canton.
