Schleswig Cathedral

The origins of the cathedral date back to 947, when the Diocese of Schleswig was founded and a first cathedral was built, whose exact location and size are unknown. The first written mention of Schleswig Cathedral can be found in 1134, when the Danish King Niels was slain in Schleswig after he had not sought refuge in the cathedral. The current site initially housed a three-aisled Romanesque basilica. Around 1200, the last documented construction work on the Romanesque transept, which is still preserved today, was completed. Granite, tufa, and brick were used as building materials. Between 1275 and 1300, the High Gothic hall choir and the Schwahl were built. The Romanesque basilica was expanded into a Late Gothic hall church between 1200 and 1408 and completed in the 16th century. The cathedral only received its final external form in 1894 with the completion of the Neo-Gothic west tower, whose construction began in 1888 at the request of Emperor Wilhelm II and was financed by French reparations. In 1218, the nine-year-old royal son Waldemar was crowned junior king of Denmark in the cathedral.

Visitors can explore the church and its impressive architecture and artworks. These include the Gothic Altar of the Three Kings, a bronze baptismal font, and the famous Bordesholm Altar. The Neo-Gothic west tower offers a viewing platform at a height of 65 meters with views of Schleswig, the Schlei, and the former fishing village of Holm.
