Schillingsches Großes Haus Castle

The "Große Haus" (Great House) in Neuffen is a rare example of a noble free seat on the city wall in Neuffen. In the Middle Ages, the defensible nobleman built his dwelling on the city wall, and thus this house also gained its importance for the defense of the city.

The "Große Haus", also known in Neuffen as "Schilling'sches Haus" (Schilling House), was the seat of the Schilling family from Cannstatt. Around 1270, Heinrich von Schilling gained a foothold in the city through his marriage to Willibirg von Neuffen. The von Schilling family sold the property to Junker Wolf von Neuhausen in 1477. Later it became the property of various local families.

The oak timbers used in the ground floor and upper floor were felled in 1364 according to dendrochronological examination. The year 1595 is carved above the lintel and indicates an extensive renovation. The half-timbered section was rebuilt, and the house was modernized inside and out. The extensive ochre-colored paintings date from this period.

In 1979, the house was declared dilapidated and residents were prohibited from further use of the building. The city of Neuffen acquired the building at the urging of the State Office for Monument Preservation. After three years of restoration, the "re-inauguration" was celebrated in 1986. The city, the district, and the state of Baden-Württemberg invested 1.3 million Euros during this time. Today, the cultural monument is one of the few buildings that have survived from the period before the city fire of 1634. The occupiers had settled in the same building.

Since its "re-inauguration", the Große Haus has housed the City Museum and the City Library.
