Salzburg Cathedral

The history of the cathedral dates back a long way: an initial Romanesque structure, a three-aisled basilica with its own baptistery, was completed as early as 774 and consecrated by Abbot Bishop Virgil. A devastating fire in 1167, allegedly set by the Counts of Plain on behalf of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, destroyed this building. Subsequently, under Bishop Konrad III, the even larger Konradin Cathedral was built, a five-aisled basilica that was then considered the largest north of the Alps. After another fire in 1598, Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had the damaged cathedral and 55 bourgeois houses demolished to make way for today's Residenzplatz. The foundation stone for the current new building was laid in 1614 under Archbishop Markus Sittikus Graf von Hohenems, according to plans by Santino Solari. The solemn consecration by Prince-Archbishop Paris von Lodron took place on September 25, 1628. In October 1944, the cathedral dome was hit by a bomb and collapsed. Reconstruction lasted from 1945 to 1959.

Salzburg Cathedral is located in the city of Salzburg, in the Salzburg City district, in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 429 m above sea level.

Today, the church can be visited and is a central attraction for visitors. It is a protected monument and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg.
