Münster Unserer Lieben Frau

The Salem Minster, a former abbey church, is located in the Bodenseekreis district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and represents one of the most significant High Gothic sacred buildings of the Cistercians in the German-speaking world. As the third-largest Gothic church in Baden-Württemberg, after the minsters in Ulm and Freiburg, it impresses with its architecture and history.
History+
The foundation of Salem Abbey took place in 1137/38 by Cistercians from Lützel Abbey. On the site of an existing, likely dilapidated chapel, a first Romanesque abbey church was erected around 1150. This three-aisled basilica with a cruciform ground plan and at least eight altars was consecrated in 1179 after approximately 30 years of construction. A century later, it was demolished to make way for the construction of the current minster. The new building, initiated by Abbot Ulrich II von Seelfingen, began around 1285 and lasted until approximately 1420. It was financed by the abbey's secured revenues and indulgences, after Rudolf I of Habsburg had placed the monastery under his protection. The minster was built as a three-aisled columnar basilica from hewn sandstone. By 1319, the choir and transept were completed and roofed, after which the construction progress slowed down.
