Sali Castle (Olten)
The Sälischlössli, a picturesque small castle with a restaurant, perches on the Engelberg high above the Aare Valley in Switzerland. Originally a medieval castle ruin, it was transformed into a romantic excursion destination in the late 19th century and is now a popular spot for visitors.
History+
Around 1260, the Lords of Ifenthal, who served the Counts of Frohburg, had Neu-Wartburg Castle built. This occurred about half a century after the construction of the nearby Alt-Wartburg and may have been related to a split in the Ifenthaler lines. In the mid-14th century, the castle passed to the Lords of Büttikon, before belonging to the Hallwylers from 1379. In 1415, during the conquest of Aargau by the Confederates, Bernese troops burned down both Wartburg castles. While Alt-Wartburg fell into disrepair, the Hallwylers had Neu-Wartburg restored. In 1539, the city of Solothurn acquired the castle, which served as a fire watch from 1547 to 1846. The current name Sälischlössli comes from the Sali family of fire watchers. The dilapidated castle ruin was auctioned off in 1863 to the Olten citizens' community. On the initiative of the Säliclub, the current Sälischlössli was built in 1870/71 according to plans by Paul Reber, in the historicizing style of the time, with little regard for the original building fabric. During World War II, it served as an aircraft observation post.

The Sälischlössli is located in Olten, in the Olten district, Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland, at an altitude of approximately 647 m above sea level.
