Testimony of the medieval monastery landscape

The Sackbrüderhaus in Erfurt represents a former monastery that once played a significant role in the religious life of the Thuringian state capital. Today, as a historical building, it bears witness to a bygone era and is an integral part of Erfurt's rich cultural heritage.

History+

The monastery's foundation dates back to the Order of the Sack Friars, which emerged in France around 1250 and was characterized by a particularly strict interpretation of poverty. In Erfurt, the Sack Friars established themselves in 1292. However, their presence in the city was short-lived, as the order was already banned in 1274 at the Second Council of Lyon. Despite the prohibition, the Sack Friars were able to exist in Erfurt for a few more years until the monastery was finally dissolved in 1302. The buildings and lands subsequently fell to other ecclesiastical institutions.

Location+

The former monastery is centrally located in the city of Erfurt, the state capital of Thuringia in Germany. Its position within the historic city walls underscores its former importance in the urban fabric.

On site+

Today, only a few traces of the original monastery remain. The historical building complex has been rebuilt and repurposed multiple times over the centuries. It now serves as a testament to Erfurt's medieval monastic landscape and is integrated into the cityscape.
