Wiesenburg Castle (Ruin)
The Wiesenburg castle ruin is the ruin of a castle in the municipality of Niederwerrn in the Lower Franconian district of Schweinfurt in Bavaria.
When Wiesenburg Castle was founded cannot be precisely determined. According to the Niederwerrn chronicle, "the castle" stood in Niederwerrn in 1252. The castle is first mentioned in a document on June 17, 1137, in connection with Niederwerrn.
According to the historian Gerhard Bach, the castle was built no earlier than 1236, presumably commissioned by the Diocese of Würzburg, was subsequently owned by various knightly families such as the Lords of Wenkheim, and passed into the possession of the von Münster family on April 14, 1420. ("to enforce their claims to Niederwerrn Castle")
In 1525, the castle was destroyed in the Palatine Peasants' War and rebuilt in the 16th century. Today, the former castle complex only shows the remains of a round tower.
