Weißenstein Castle (Ruin) (Wehrda)

Weißenstein Castle is a castle ruin near the Wehrda district of Marburg an der Lahn in the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Hesse, Germany.

The hilltop castle is located approx. 1000 m north of Wehrda above the Lahn valley on a white Bunter sandstone hill, from which its name is derived.

Excavation finds prove that the site was used in early times; possibly some of the ramparts date from the Iron Age. The rampart enclosed an area of 620 m².

In the 8th and 9th centuries, the actual construction of the castle began with a square building. By the 11th century, the complex was expanded with ring walls, a residential tower, a triangular annex, and a residential building with a pentagonal tower. At the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 12th century, the complex was destroyed by a fire. The destruction of the complex in 1248 by troops of Landgravine Sophie of Brabant, as claimed by Wigand Gerstenberg, is probably incorrect, as the excavation findings show no use after the period around 1100.
