Weissenburg Castle (Ruin) (Därstetten)
The Weissenburg ruin was a medieval castle in the municipality of Därstetten in the canton of Bern from the 13th century. The castle hill is located west of Därstetten and can be reached via a road.
Several meters high remains of the southern curtain wall (45 m), the round tower and an outwork defensive tower are still visible.
In 1278, the castle was first documented as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Weissenburg. Their dominion extended over parts of the Niedersimmental from Oberwil to Diemtigen. The Lords of Weissenburg are with high probability the successors of the Lords of Erlenbach.
At the end of the 15th century, the castle was abandoned and began to decay. At the beginning of the 18th century, one of the defensive towers was still standing, but it was used as a quarry and is no longer present today.
