Waldeck Castle (Ruin)
The Waldeck castle ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the approximately 641-meter-high basalt cone of the Waldecker Schlossberg, about five kilometers east of Kemnath in the district of Tirschenreuth in Bavaria. It was one of the oldest castles in the Upper Palatinate.
In 1124, Waldeck Castle was first mentioned in a document. It was owned by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg, who sold the castle in 1283 with parts of the surrounding Waldeck lordship to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. The remaining parts of the Waldeck lordship (including Weißenstein Castle) were sold by the Counts of Leuchtenberg to Burgrave Friedrich III of Nuremberg.
Until 1698, the castle was the seat of the Waldeck-Kemnath regional court. During the War of the Spanish Succession, the castle was besieged by imperial troops, captured in October 1704, and razed on the orders of Emperor Joseph I. Although the castle was rebuilt, it burned down in 1794 and has been a ruin ever since. Since about 2004, the ruin has been excavated and restored.
