Visingsborg Castle (Ruin)

The Visingsborg ruin, once a magnificent castle, is located on the eastern side of the idyllic island of Visingsö in Lake Vättern. Originally built in the 16th century, it now bears witness to the former power and influence of the noble Brahe family.
History+
The construction of Visingsborg Castle began in the 1560s, designed as a square complex with four towers and a surrounding moat. Stones from Alvastra Abbey were reused for its construction. Per Brahe the Elder initiated the building of the west wing, followed by his son Magnus Brahe, who added the south wing with its representative halls. Under Per Brahe the Younger, a north wing for servants was added, and a harbor was also built during his time. The castle, which once featured six towers with gilded spires, housed an extensive library and an armory. A garrison of 200 men was stationed here. A devastating fire on the night of December 22-23, 1718, for which Russian prisoners of war were blamed, led to the castle's destruction.
