The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin Treffelstein, also called Dragon Tower, is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a 523-meter-high rock (Burgstraße/Am Drachenturm) in Treffelstein in the district of Cham in Bavaria.

It is unclear whether the mention of Heinrich von Treuenstein in 1290 is related to Treffelstein Castle. In 1315, Ruger de Dreuenstein, presumably a son of the former, is the first confirmed owner of the castle. These lords were either ministerials of the Schwarzenburgers or the Bavarian dukes.

The castle was under Leuchtenberg rule from 1336. Heinrich, Jacob, and Hilprant Treffelsteiner are named as vassals. From 1400, the castle was owned by the local nobility of the Paulsdorfers, the Nothafft zu Runding, and the Satzenhofers, and in 1509 Heinrich Guttensteiner zu Schwarzenburg sold Treffelstein to the Palatinate and it was pledged to Hans Fuchs zu Schneeberg in 1530. In 1634, the castle was destroyed by the Swedes and abandoned after a fire in 1695.

Of the former castle complex, only the round keep (Dragon Tower), still 15 meters high today, made of rubble masonry with a diameter of 6.5 meters and a wall thickness of 2.5 meters, remains on the highest point of the castle rock. The staircase of the south-facing entrance, located 10 meters high, is of more recent origin.
