Tiefenstein Castle (Ruin)
Tiefenstein Castle is a ruined castle above a quarry near the Tiefenstein district of the municipality of Görwihl in the Waldshut district in Baden-Württemberg.
The hilltop castle, mentioned in 1241, was probably only built in the 13th century by the Lords of Teufen and gave its name to the then village of Tiefenstein. It can be assumed that the name also transferred to the noble family, who only thereafter referred to themselves as Lords of Tiefenstein and no longer of Teufen. Whether they actually built the castle or whether a castle complex already existed before remains to be investigated. The Barons of Tegerfelden are also possible builders or owners. In 1272, the castle was destroyed by Rudolf von Habsburg. Former owners after the Tiefensteins were the Bishop of Basel. Rudolf von Habsburg also destroyed → Weißenburg Castle in 1288.
Layout+
Of the former castle complex, two wall remnants are still preserved. 300 meters to the south are the remains of an early hillfort, the Tiefenstein Hillfort. In the 16th century, larger parts of the complex, although already a ruin at that time, were still present. The then Abbot Caspar von St. Blasien described this as: "still parts of the castle walls, but uninhabited and decayed".
