Steinhilben Castle (Ruin)

Steinhilben Castle, also known as Steinhaus (Stone House), is a ruined castle in Steinhilben, a present-day district of Trochtelfingen in the Reutlingen district (Baden-Württemberg).

Presumably, the castle, the "Steinhaus," was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Steinhilben, first mentioned in 1247, a branch of the lower nobility Märheld von Wurmlingen. After the Steinhilben property likely came early to the dominion of Trochtelfingen, it was sold by the Counts of Hohenberg to Württemberg in 1310. Towards the end of the 14th century, the Lords of Steinhilben donated large parts of their property, partly as a Württemberg fief, to the Güterstein Provostry. After the Reformation and the dissolution of Güterstein, the "Steinhaus" became Württemberg's own property in 1555. Today, parts of the curtain wall of the former castle house are still preserved.
