Sola Castle (Ruin) (Mitlödi)

Sola Castle was likely inhabited in the late 12th or early 13th century. Archaeological finds confirm a period of settlement, but the complex may have been abandoned as early as 1250. Little is known about the exact history of the castle or its former owners. After its abandonment, the ruin was used as a quarry over the centuries, for example, after a fire in the village of Obersool in 1713. Between 1927 and 1929, the remains were excavated and restored. Since 1929, the complex has been owned by the Historical Society of the Canton of Glarus, which is responsible for its preservation.

The Sola ruin is situated at approximately 665 meters above sea level in Mitlödi, in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland. It is located on a prominent conical hill.

Visitors can explore the Sola ruin. The complex is protected by a ditch on its south and east sides. At the core of the site, a large walled quadrangle measuring 15 by 24 meters was uncovered, representing an inner enceinte. Two wings once leaned against this wall. The masonry consists of regularly layered stones with a thickness of about two meters, and the massive cornerstones feature bossing. Artifacts such as unglazed stove tiles, pots, arrowheads, and daggers, discovered during excavations, are exhibited in the Freulerpalast Museum in Näfels.
