Serviezel (Tschlin)

The ruins of Serviezel Castle are located in the municipality of Tschlin, west of Martina in the Lower Engadine, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden.

The ruins of Serviezel Castle are situated on an elongated rock between two ravines, between Martina and Tschlin. The castle can be reached on foot from Martina in a good half hour. However, the last part of the path is difficult to find, extremely steep, and only recommended for experienced climbers.

Some remains of the northern curtain wall have been surprisingly well preserved. Only a small remnant of the southern ring wall is still visible. The plateau itself is heavily overgrown, and nothing of the former buildings can be seen. Some rectangular terracing indicates former constructions.

In the summer of 2011, the path to the ruin was repaired and an information board was installed. Shrubs and trees that had overgrown the site were removed.

As with the ruin of Ramosch of the same name, written documents about the construction and history of the castle are also missing here. Ulrich Campell mentioned in 1573 that the castle was called Chaistelg Ser Guietzel by the locals. The name Serviezel can therefore be derived from "Lord Wezzel". A Wezzel is mentioned among the Lords of Ramosch in 1148 as Wezel de Remuscie and in 1150 as Wezelo de Ramuscia. When and under what circumstances the castle was abandoned is not known.
