Schöneberg Castle, also known as Schönberg or Schöneburg, is a castle ruin located on an 860-meter high plateau near the hamlet of Schönberg in the municipality of Betzigau in the Oberallgäu district of Bavaria.

The tower castle was inhabited from the 10th to the 11th century by the abbots of Kempten Monastery and by an unknown knightly family. The castle was first mentioned in 1400 as being in the possession of Walter von Königsegg zu Wartenstein, with its pledging to the knight Heinrich von Nauns. In 1405, the castle was redeemed and sold to Kempten Abbey, to Prince-Abbot Friedrich von Laubenberg, which was confirmed in 1436 by the supreme liege lord Emperor Sigismund.

From the 17th century onwards, the castle fell into disrepair. By the end of the 19th century, a partially preserved four-story tower ruin was still visible, which lost three walls around 1950 during the installation of a water reservoir. Around 1970, the castle moats were filled in. In 2007, the municipality of Betzigau carried out renovation work as part of the Leader-Plus castle project "Castle Region Allgäu".

Description+

Of the former castle complex, situated on a castle hill 28 meters wide at its base and 5 meters high, with a main castle and a northern outer bailey, both enclosed by moats, only about 4-meter high wall remnants of the square residential tower remain. The various remnants of the tower walls point to the period around 1300. The neighboring farm is located on the former economic courtyard of the outer bailey.
