Schöllnstein Castle (Ruin)

The castle was built in 1358 by the Lords of Puchberg. In 1742, the castle was conquered and partially destroyed by the Austrians, remaining uninhabited ever since, and was largely torn down in 1768. In 1850, the high remaining walls were demolished due to their threat to the houses at the foot of the mountain.

Originally, the castle consisted of a main castle and a bailey. The main castle was protected by a curtain wall and several towers. The bailey contained residential and utility buildings.

The Main Castle

The main castle was located on the highest point of the castle hill. It consisted of a palas, a keep, and a chapel. The palas was a multi-story residential building with a large hall and several chambers. The keep was a massive defensive tower that served as a last refuge in times of siege. The chapel was a small, single-nave building with a choir.

The Bailey

The bailey was located below the main castle and was also protected by a wall. It contained stables, barns, workshops, and servants' quarters. There was also a well in the bailey that supplied the castle with water.

Today, only a few remnants of the castle are preserved. These include parts of the curtain wall, the foundations of the palas, and the remains of the keep. The castle ruins are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts.
