The Richensee ruin in Hitzkirch, Canton Lucerne, is an impressive megalithic tower that once formed the center of a small settlement. This historic structure, often referred to as the "Roman Tower," bears witness to the territorial politics of the 13th century and remains a well-preserved reminder of bygone eras.
History+
The origins of Richensee Castle date back to the 13th century. In 1237, the Counts of Kyburg and Beromünster Abbey agreed to build a fortification near Ermensee, which later developed into the settlement of Richensee. Around 1240, the distinctive tower was likely erected. Under the Habsburgs, Richensee experienced its heyday around 1300. During the Sempach War (1386), the site found itself caught between fronts: initially, residents sought protection with Lucerne, but after occupation by Austrian troops, Richensee was plundered and burned, with many Confederates falling. This led to the loss of its town rights. In 1415, the settlement fell to Lucerne and later became part of the Freiamt. In 1920, the Canton of Lucerne had the tower restored to preserve its historical substance.
