Reinsburg Castle (Ruin) (Reinsfeld)
The Reinsburg consists of the remains of a ridge castle in the Thuringian Reinsberge. It is located between Kleinbreitenbach, Reinsfeld, and Schmerfeld.
The foundations of the Reinsburg are laid out in an irregular, approximately oval shape and are about 60 meters long. This made it the largest of all castles on the slopes of the Gera. The ruins of the buildings are located in the southeastern area of the former castle grounds, which lie about 600 meters above sea level. The assumption that an underground passage connected the Reinsburg with the Plauesche Ehrenburg found some clues, but could not be confirmed.
The time of the construction of the Reinsburg is unknown. The age of the piled-up earth walls indicates a hillfort that already stood on this site before the medieval fortification. It was probably stormed for the last time in 1289 or 1290 during a campaign by the Roman-German King Rudolf of Habsburg, which aimed at establishing peace and led to the destruction of a total of 66 castles in Thuringia.
Folktales+
According to a folktale, "in ancient times" a giant lived on the Reinsburg and another giant on the Singer Berg. Both giants lived in a permanent feud. Smaller beings moved the giants from one place to the next, and according to the legend, one day they argued for mere pastime: The giant on the Reinsburg threw a mighty war hammer towards Singer Berg, but missed his target and finally hit the place where the village of Hammersfeld later emerged. Angrily, the giant on the Singer Berg threw a large lump of Schmer (either lard or mud) towards Reinsburg, but also missed his target and hit the place where Schmerfeld was later founded.
Another folktale tells of unused supplies of delicious wine in the buried cellars of the Reinsburg, which will one day reach the surface and flood "all of Thuringia."
