Ramspau Castle (Ruin)
The Ramspau castle ruin is a castle ruin on the Schlossberg (Castle Hill) at 400 meters west-southwest of the church in the district of Ramspau, part of the market town of Regenstauf in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg, Bavaria.
The hilltop castle was presumably built in the 13th century by the Wittelsbach family. In 1312, a knight "Weichser de Ranspaur" was first mentioned in a document. It is presumed that the existing castle then passed to the Knights of Weichs near Regensburg.
In the following years, a Heinrich, Hans, and Marquart Weichser von Ramspau are mentioned, who were also ducal administrators in Kelheim and Falkenstein. The castle itself is mentioned in 1428, when the chronicler Andreas von Regensburg writes of a Kelheim administrator Ludwig Chamerauer as its owner.
The castle is said to have been occupied for a time during a feud with an Abensberger through a ruse.
After Wigeleus von Weichs sold his Ramspau possessions to Kuttenauer von Albertshofen in 1480, the owners changed frequently.
After the castle was still described as intact in the 16th century, it must have been abandoned soon after. Presumably, the stones were used for the baroque castle, which was built from 1706 by the Reisach family.
Description+
The small, almost rectangular hilltop castle was separated from the towering mountain plateau by a moat and was difficult to secure. On the slope side, there are still open cellar vaults made of quarry stone, which indicate earlier buildings. The castle presumably had a Zwinger (outer bailey) and a small outer ward with access to the castle complex.
The ruin still shows the almost completely preserved polygonal five-sided keep with 1.5-meter thick quarry stone walls and an outward-facing loophole.
