Oberurnen Castle (Ruin)

The oldest parts of the complex, particularly the remains of the mighty palas, are dated to the late 13th century. Around 1300 or at the beginning of the 14th century, further structures such as the bailey and curtain wall were added. The castle served as a Habsburg administrative center and was the seat of the sub-bailiffs Stucki in the second half of the 14th century. It is presumed that the castle was used by the inhabitants of Oberurnen and Niederurnen as a refuge in times of danger after 1386. No destruction during the wars of independence is documented. By the 15th century at the latest, the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair.

The Oberurnen Ruin is situated at approximately 481 meters above sea level in the municipality of Oberurnen in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland.

Visitors can explore the ruin today. Of the original complex, the over two-meter-thick northwest wall of the palas, which still rises about 16 meters high, as well as remnants of the curtain wall, are preserved. Conservation work after the last turn of the century saved the northwest wall from complete collapse.
