Oberhohenberg Castle (Ruin)

Oberhohenberg Castle, also known as Hohenberg, is a castle ruin, a castle built at the beginning of the High Middle Ages near Schörzingen, a district of Schömberg in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The former hilltop castle was located on the 1,011-meter-high conical peak of Oberhohenberg, the second-highest mountain in the Swabian Jura and the highest mountain in the Zollernalbkreis. It belongs to the region of the 10 Tausender (ten thousanders). The name of the medieval County of Hohenberg, which had its lands around Oberhohenberg mountain, is derived from Oberhohenberg.

Excavations prove that the mountain was already settled during the Alamannic period. In the Middle Ages, the County of Hohenberg had its seat on Oberhohenberg.

The castle was built between 1050 and 1100 by the Counts of Hohenberg. A mention of the castle is known from the year 1179. After its transfer to Austria, the castle saw changing and sometimes dubious feudal lords. As a result of a feud, the castle was besieged by Rottweil soldiers in 1449, captured, and completely destroyed. After its destruction, the castle complex was razed.

In 1913, the foundations of the castle complex were uncovered, measured, and reburied by the Schörzingen Albverein to protect them from further destruction.
