Niedergundelfingen Castle (Ruin)
The Niedergundelfingen ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the high Schlossberg of Niedergundelfingen, 800 meters from Hohengundelfingen Castle near the Gundelfingen district of the municipality of Münsingen in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg.
Presumably, the first castle was built around 1080 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Gundelfingen and was expanded around 1250 by the knight Swigger IX. de Novogundelfing. In 1264 and 1268, Swigger von Neugundelfingen is mentioned in documents. On February 11, 1407, Friedrich III. sold the possessions to Jörg von Woellwarth, who sold the property to Wolf von Stein zu Klingenstein on March 1, 1409, and before 1617, the property passed to Reichlin von Meldegg. Around 1700, the castle included a chapel, a bakehouse, barn and stables, as well as several meadows, fields, and fishing waters. In 1833, the castle was sold by Baron Reichlin to private ownership. After further changes of ownership, school councilor Freytag acquired the castle and built a residence on the castle ruin. After the partial collapse of the surrounding wall in 1966, reconstruction took place.
Description+
The castle complex, which did not have a keep typical for the period, consists of a rectangular curtain wall, which was surrounded by a Zwinger wall. The entrance to the castle was preceded by an outer bailey, of which remnants of walls are still preserved.
The original living area was located in the north of the complex. The palas of the living area featured Romanesque double windows on the north wall. A Gothic gate hall, which was reached via a now-filled-in moat, is still preserved, as is the cistern well inside the castle and the cellar on the east wall of the castle wall. When the chapel, restored in 1988 and consecrated to Saint Michael, which was considered dilapidated in 1715, was built is not known.
