Neuhaus Castle (Ruin)

The Neuhaus Castle Ruin is the ruin of a high medieval noble castle on a 30-meter high freestanding rock outcrop in the Neuhaus district of the municipality of Schorndorf in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham in Bavaria.

Documentary evidence first mentions an "Otto de novo castro" in 1254, although it is unclear whether he belonged to the Buchberger or Satelboger family. From the 14th century, the Sattelboger family is documented as owners of the castle, with a testimony from "Milot and Jacob von dem Newnhaus" for Friedrich Sattelboger in 1320, and Konrad Sattelboger is confirmed as lord of the castle in 1351.

A destruction of Neuhaus Castle in 1445 by Duke Albrecht III of Bavaria-Munich due to robber knighthood likely refers to Neuhaus Castle near Nittenau in the neighboring district of Schwandorf, which was owned by the Zenger family.

As the castle was divided into several shares, these subsequently passed to multiple owners. In 1641, the castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

From 1829 to 1918, the ruin was owned by the high noble family Thurn und Taxis and thereafter by the brewer family Schauer from Sattelpeilnstein.

Significant wall remnants of the residential tower of the hilltop castle are still preserved, which today serve as a stage and backdrop for open-air performances.
