History+

The origins of Neu-Aspermont Castle date back to the first half of the 13th century, when the Lords of Aspermont, whose ancestral seat was Alt-Aspermont, erected the complex. During the 13th century, the castle developed into an important center of their dominion. Despite initial restrictions by the Bishop of Chur and the Barons of Vaz, who prohibited expansion, the castle was further developed. In the mid-14th century, Neu-Aspermont passed into the possession of the von Rankweil family, followed by the Straiff and Sigberg families. In 1499, during the Swabian War, the castle was plundered and partially destroyed by Bündner troops because the then owners, the von Schlandersberg family, supported Austria. After reconstruction, rapid changes in ownership followed, until the castle was abandoned in the second half of the 17th century and fell into disrepair. In the 19th century, a descendant of the founding family, Ernest von Rhomberg, acquired the ruin, which remains in family possession today. Since 2001, stabilization work has been carried out on the walls.
