Neidenstein Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Neidenstein is located in the Neidenstein district of Hollfeld in Franconian Switzerland.
The complex was presumably built in the last quarter of the 15th century by the Lords of Aufseß. In 1488, it was first mentioned in a document by Christoph von Aufseß.
In 1510, the castle was enfeoffed by Wilhelm von Aufseß to Bishop Georg of the Diocese of Bamberg. For this or another reason, disputes arose within the family of the Lords of Aufseß. In this context, the castle and the associated village of Gerbersdorf were renamed Neidenstein.
During the German Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was completely destroyed. After its reconstruction, it was attacked and devastated by the Hollfelders during the Thirty Years' War, while occupied by the Bishop of Bamberg. In 1652/1653, the castle was already mentioned only as a ruin.
