Näs Castle (Ruin)
At the southern tip of the island of Visingsö in Lake Vättern stands the ruin of Näs, once an important royal residence and Sweden's first national castle. Its strategic importance in the Middle Ages shaped early Swedish history.
History+
The complex, also known in medieval writings as Visingsö or Visingsö hus, was built in the 12th century as a royal residence. Sverker the Elder and his son Karl Sverkersson may have been the builders. Especially at the beginning of the 13th century, the castle formed the center of Swedish royal power. From here, the earliest Sweden was governed. In 1318, the castle was pledged by King Birger Magnusson to the Danes and eventually destroyed after several conflicts.

The Näs ruin is located on the island of Visingsö, which belongs to the Jönköping district in the Jönköping region of Sweden. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 96 meters above sea level.
