Montvoie Castle (Ruin) (Ocourt)

The first documented mention of Montvoie Castle dates back to 1284, when the Counts of Neuchâtel in Burgundy granted the fortified house to Knight Richard von Vendlincourt. This noble family, whose ancestral seat was west of the Doubs, held the entire Doubs valley as an episcopal fief and exercised the vogt's office in Ajoie. In the mid-14th century, the castle passed to Knight Simon von St-Aubin, whose quarrelsome and cruel nature led to conflicts with his neighbors. Armed men from Porrentruy and St-Ursanne took advantage of his absence to occupy and burn down the castle. Following a compromise with Bishop Johann von Vienne, Simon was awarded compensation, and the castle was apparently rebuilt. However, tensions between the lord of the castle and the populace persisted, leading to another occupation of the castle. After the extinction of the St-Aubin family, Montvoie passed to the de Tavannes family through an heiress, who significantly expanded and strengthened the castle in the mid-15th century. During the Burgundian Wars, it served as an important flank protection. Later, after the extinction of the de Tavannes, the fief passed to the von Granvillers family. Following further changes of ownership and the Thirty Years' War, which caused extensive damage to the castle that had been expanded in the 16th century, it was not restored and gradually fell into disrepair.

The Montvoie ruin is located in Ocourt in the district of Porrentruy, Canton Jura, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 723 m above sea level.
