Maisenburg Castle (Ruin)

The Maisenburg ruin is the ruin of a hilltop castle at the end of a plateau above the Lauter Valley near the district of Indelhausen in the town of Hayingen in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was built during the 12th century by the Knights of Maisenburg, and first mentioned in 1268 as Castrum Maisenburg. Besides the Lords of Maisenburg, the Lords of Gundelfingen later owned the castle. From 1764 to 2003, the property was owned by the von Speth family; after 1820, the castle was abandoned as a residence and fell into disrepair. After the core castle fell into ruin, the outer bailey was converted for residential use and used for agricultural purposes. In 1991 and 1992, the complex underwent extensive renovation. Since 2003, the property has been acquired by a private investor.

Of the former castle complex, a small castle with a strong Staufer shield wall with bossage, which indicates a conversion in the 13th to 14th century, remains of a stone house are still preserved.

The still preserved estate part (outer bailey) was extensively renovated until the end of 2005 and converted into holiday apartments and a banquet hall.
