Lichteneck Castle (Ruin)

Lichteneck Castle, also spelled Lichtenegg Castle, is today a ruin of a former High Medieval to early modern castle, which rises in the summit area of the hill known as "Schlossberg". It is located above the Lichteneck district of the municipality of Rimbach in the district of Cham in Bavaria.

The hilltop castle was built at the beginning of the 13th century, mentioned in 1301 as "castrum in Liehtenek", was probably the seat of a Heinrich von Lichtenegg, and in the second third of the 14th century, the Lords of Lichteneck are named as owners. From 1341 to 1537, the Sattelbogener family is said to have been the lords of the castle. From 1420 to 1430, destruction by Hussites presumably took place. Around 1490, Duke Albrecht of Bavaria is also mentioned as an owner, and in the 16th century, the Baumgartner family. Between 1527 and 1558, the castle burned down and fell into disrepair at the end of the 16th century. In 1719, the Pelkofen family had a new "Schlösschen" (small castle) built below the ruin, and in 1719, the local parish church. The castle was originally the center of a Hofmark, to which large parts of today's municipal area belonged. In 1982, the remains of the castle were renovated.
