Landeck Castle (Ruin) (Schenklengsfeld)
The ruin of Landeck Castle is located at an altitude of around 470 m on a rock spur of the Landecker Berg northeast of the Schenklengsfeld district of Oberlengsfeld in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district.
The spur castle was built in 1234 by Hersfeld Abbey as an administrative castle. In 1317, a Hersfeld bailiff was documented in "Landecke"; thereafter, however, the office was frequently pledged in the 14th and 15th centuries - most recently to Mainz, from which it was redeemed again in 1454. During the Peasants' War in 1525, there were considerable unrests in Hersfeld and the surrounding area. Landgrave Philipp of Hesse came to the aid of the distressed abbot, suppressed the uprising, and annexed large parts of the Imperial Abbey, including the Landeck office, to cover his costs. The castle was probably destroyed during this time.
The still preserved wall remains of the curtain wall were restored and reinforced in 1982.
