The "Landvogtei" in Sarnen+
A brief history+

The house was built between 1633-1654 for the bailiff Rudolf Kreuel using building materials from the ruined tower of the Lords of Ballwil.

It served as the residence and office of the ducal bailiffs until 1798. After the French Revolution, it was used by the canton of Obwalden as a government building and arsenal. From 1874 to 1983, it housed the cantonal museum.

Since 1983, it has been home to the Cantonal Archives and the Cantonal Library of Obwalden.

Architecture and Art+

The "Landvogtei" is a magnificent example of late Renaissance architecture in Central Switzerland. The building features a stately facade with a stepped gable and an impressive oriel window.

Inside, valuable stucco work, wood carvings, and ceiling paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved. Particularly noteworthy is the "Rittersaal" (Knight's Hall) with its richly decorated ceiling and a large tiled stove.

The "Rittersaal"

The "Rittersaal" was used for official receptions and festivities. It is adorned with portraits of former bailiffs and allegorical representations.

The Chapel

The "Landvogtei" also has a small chapel with an altar from the 17th century. The chapel served the private devotion of the bailiffs and their families.

Current Use and Public Access+

Today, the "Landvogtei" is a cultural center that houses the Cantonal Archives and the Cantonal Library. It is open to the public and offers insights into the history and culture of Obwalden.

Regular exhibitions and events take place in the historic rooms. The "Rittersaal" can also be rented for private events.
