Konzenberg Castle (Ruin)

Konzenberg Castle is a ruined spur castle in the municipality of Wurmlingen near Tuttlingen in the district of Tuttlingen.

The castle was built in the High Middle Ages, probably by the noble free lords of Wartenberg. It was first mentioned in a document in 1239 and was at that time already in the possession of the noble free lords Fürst von Hirschegg, whose father Konrad Fürst I had married Udilhild von Wartenberg.

Konrad Fürst von Konzenberg III sold the castle and its appurtenances in 1300 to Bishop Heinrich II of Constance, who in 1301 acquired the judicial lordship (Vogtei) of Wurmlingen (with Weilheim) and a part of the Vogtei of Frittlingen, making it the lordship of Konzenberg.

In 1460, the Vogtei Wurmlingen with the Konzenberg fortress was pledged by the Prince-Bishopric of Constance to the Constance Cathedral Provostry, which united it with the adjacent private property of the Cathedral Provost and administered it uniformly from Wurmlingen. In 1614, the Cathedral Provostry acquired the pledged share of the lordship, including Konzenberg Castle, which was temporarily used as a prison, as its property, which was then secularized in 1802/03. In 1820, the castle was sold for demolition and subsequently became a ruin. Today, the remains of the keep, made of mighty shell limestone ashlar blocks, still exist.
