The remains of the Castle can be visited

The castle ruin Kleiner Gudenberg is located on the high Kleiner Gudenberg west of the core town of Zierenberg in the North Hessian district of Kassel in Germany.

The castle ruin is located in the northern part of the Habichtswald Nature Park on the Kleiner Gudenberg, a densely forested basalt cone, which rises almost 2.3 kilometers (km) west of Zierenberg and almost 2.3 km east-southeast of its district Oberelsungen. Northeast of the mountain, the terrain slopes down to the Warme valley. Approximately 470 meters southeast is the castle ruin on the Großer Gudenberg, about 1.9 km south stands the Bärenbergturm on the Großer Bärenberg, about 1.8 km north-northeast is the castle ruin Falkenberg, and about 3.15 km north-northwest stands Escheberg Castle.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1175, but was probably built during the time of the Hessian Gau count Werner IV. It was a Mainz fief of the Lords of Gudenberg. The castle was destroyed by Landgrave Heinrich I of Hesse in the Mainz-Hessian conflicts of 1269/72.

The ruin is freely accessible, but can only be reached via paths and trails that lead partly steeply up to the Kleiner Gudenberg. Of the former castle, only remains of ditches, walls and ramparts are still present.
