History+
The origins of the palace date back to the early 9th century, when it was probably built under Louis the Pious, son of Charlemagne. It replaced Merovingian buildings from the 7th century, which in turn followed Alamannic settlements. Over two centuries, the complex was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, giving rise to the predecessors of today's cathedral. From the 11th, or at the latest 12th century, the palace lost its function as a royal residence due to fires, reconstruction, and demolition. Its remains disappeared for almost a millennium under subsequent civic development. Only after the destruction of Frankfurt's old town in World War II could archaeological excavations uncover the palace's actual location. Since the early 1970s, the findings have been presented in the Archaeological Garden.
