Hütting Castle (Ruin)
The ruin of the high to late medieval Hütting Castle is located on a steep rock reef high above the Rennertshofen district of Hütting in the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district in Upper Bavaria. Apart from one wall of the former palas, only traces of the terrain remain of the spur castle.
The fortress was built around 1060 by the Counts of Lechsgemünd. The administration was transferred to a family of ministeriales, who subsequently named themselves after the castle. The Lords of Hütting resided on the castle rock until around 1342. After the death of the last count, the county fell to the Dukes of Bavaria.
The Dukes used the lordship several times as collateral. Around 1421/22, the castle was burned down in one of the numerous conflicts between the Bavarian partial duchies and subsequently abandoned.
Over the next centuries, the abandoned castle served as a welcome quarry for the villagers. In the 19th century, a last remnant of the curtain wall collapsed. At the end of the 20th century, the remaining part of the palas was conserved.
Description+
The main castle apparently consisted mainly of a small residential tower or palas on a rock outcrop, which forms the end of a terrain spur projecting to the east. To the west, a small outer bailey was located in front. Here, the foundations of an approximately square building can be traced.
Both parts of the castle are separated by a flattened section ditch. The neck ditch in front of the outer bailey is also largely leveled.
The east wall of the main building is still preserved to a height of about seven to eight meters and is pierced by five window openings. The southeast corner of the building has also been preserved. The masonry is about one meter thick and consists of irregular rubble stones.
The ruin stands in a spectacular location on the Jura massif. To the north, south, and east, the castle rock drops almost vertically into the valley; an ascent is only possible from the west.
The small castle ruin at the entrance to the Wellheim dry valley, together with its neighboring Wellheim Castle, is one of the lesser-known fortifications in Bavaria and is rarely discussed in specialist literature.
