Hohenwittlingen Castle (Ruin)

Hohenwittlingen Castle, also known as Wittlingen, is a castle ruin above the Erms river on a mountain spur near the Wittlingen district of the city of Bad Urach in the Reutlingen district of Baden-Württemberg.

The hilltop castle was built by the knight Burkhard von Wittlingen at the beginning of the 11th century, and in 1189/90, a Burkhard de Witlingin is mentioned in documents. In 1548, the reformer Johannes Brenz hid in the castle. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed and fell into disrepair after 1648. Owners of the castle included the Counts of Achalm-Urach, in 1100 the Zwiefalten Monastery, and in 1251 the Counts of Württemberg. Of the former castle complex, which included an outer bailey, a main castle with a palas, a shield wall, a zwinger, and a neck ditch, the encircling walls are still preserved.
