Hohenmelchingen Castle (Ruin)
The Hohenmelchingen ruin, also known as Melchingen, is a castle ruin on the "Halde" at about 825 meters above sea level southeast of Melchingen, a district of Burladingen in the Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Württemberg.
The hilltop castle, presumably built in the 12th century, whose builders and early inhabitants are unknown, was first mentioned in 1344. At that time, Count Eberhard II and Ulrich von Württemberg, who were owners of the castle at the time, gave their part of Melchingen Castle, village, vogtei, court, and three estates in Ringingen as a fief to Burkhard von Melchingen. After 1439, parts of the castle were repeatedly sold; in 1555, it was owned by Württemberg and presumably became a ruin after its destruction (already called "Burgstall" in 1580) around 1592. From 1979 to 1984, the ruin was restored by the city of Burladingen under the direction of architect Wilfried Pfefferkorn.

The castle complex, which is one of the largest in the "Sonnenalb," featured a keep, a palas (former front house), a bathhouse, a back house, an oven, a vaulted cellar, an upper, middle, and lower castle courtyard, cisterns, a southern and western zwinger, a southern and western enceinte with gate and portal, as well as moats and ramparts.
