Haldenstein Castle (Ruin)

The remains of the Castle can be visited

The Haldenstein Ruin, a significant hilltop castle, perches on a prominent rock formation above the municipality of Haldenstein in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is the most prominent of three castles in this region, offering a fascinating glimpse into medieval architecture and history.

History+

The exact construction period of Haldenstein Castle is not entirely clear, but the oldest structural elements date back to the 12th century. Its first documented mention appears in 1299. Due to its challenging location on the rugged rock, it is believed to be the youngest of the three Haldenstein castles. From 1260, the Lords of Haldenstein emerged as vassals of the Barons of Vaz. Towards the end of the 13th century, after the extinction of the Lichtenstein family, the Lordship of Haldenstein was formed, existing as an independent territory until 1803. The castle was inhabited until approximately 1695 but gradually fell into disrepair in its final decades. A catastrophic event on December 24, 1769, sealed its fate when the eastern part of the castle rock collapsed, taking significant portions of the complex with it.

The Haldenstein Ruin is situated at an elevation of approximately 696 m above sea level in the municipality of Haldenstein, Landquart district, Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland.
