Grünenberg Castle (Ruin) (Melchnau)
The Grünenberg ruin in Melchnau, Canton Bern, was once the ancestral seat of the Barons of Grünenberg. This imposing castle complex, whose origins date back to 11th-century wooden structures, was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century and bears witness to a turbulent history.
History+
The first documented mention of Grünenberg Castle occurred in 1248. Over the centuries, the complex underwent several renovations and expansions, constantly changing its appearance. Eventually, the castle came into the possession of the city of Bern, which established a small bailiwick there for some time. From the 16th century onwards, the castle began to decay, and its walls served as a quarry. In the 19th century, the castle tower was allegedly blown up for safety reasons. A special feature is the chapel's tiled floor, created around 1270, consisting of relief-decorated clay tiles, much of which is still preserved in situ today.

The Grünenberg ruin is located at approximately 622 meters above sea level on the Schlossberg of Melchnau in Oberaargau, Canton Bern, Switzerland. This ridge extends at right angles into the valley of the Melchnau village stream.
