Gangelt Castle (Ruin)

Gangelt Castle is a castle ruin in the municipality of Gangelt (Burgstraße 5) in the district of Heinsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Gangelt Castle was integrated into the town's fortifications, built around 1250, constructed in the 14th century and first mentioned around 1365. After 1400, the town's fortifications included a town wall with three town gates, of which the Bruchtor and Heinsberger Tor are still preserved.

The castle, which together with the fortifications was owned by the Counts of Schaesberg and was rebuilt in 1511 by Gothart von Kanzler, suffered considerable damage in 1543 during the storming of the town by the Burgundians and was further expanded after its reconstruction.

In 1791, the castle was demolished except for the keep (residential tower), which formerly also contained chambers. In 1945, the castle moat was filled with the war rubble of the town. Restorations took place from 1986 to 1988.
